Wright Forest - Cockatoo

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

Wright Forest Bushland Reserve is a pocket of natural bushland which is also part of the 14.5km Eastern Dandenong Ranges Trail. A number of walking tracks crisscross through this quiet park with the chance of seeing Puffing Billy cross historic trestle bridges at a few points. This 161 hectare (400 acres) reserve consists of remnant native eucalyptus forest and is home to significant wildlife and native vegetation. There's plenty of shade along most of the walk, but it is in a high fire danger area so take care during bushfire season. In winter it takes on a different look and a cold morning mist adds yet another dimension to it’s look & feel.

From Boundary Track that runs in front of the car park, walk down into the bush along Yellow Track. At the end, turn left and then after about 20m turn right down Blue Track. This track ends at the Puffing Billy track, with the impressive trestle bridge crossing the gully towards you. Turn right and then right again up Orange Track until you reach Red Track. Turn right, then after about 50m left onto Grasstree Track. Once you've reached the top of the steep hill (see below) and had a rest, turn right onto Tetratheka Track. When you reach Boundary Track, turn right and follow it back to the car park.

The tracks are mostly well signposted, sloping up and down, rough gravel and dirt, and predominantly nice and wide. There is one short, very steep uphill section on this walk which does require a fairly reasonable level of fitness, photos don't do it justice, but it's mostly downhill after that and most people agree the walk is worth it :)

Please wear appropriate shoes, and if you have a hiking/walking stick, this is a good walk to bring it on.
