Lysterfield Park Hallam Rd North Entrance - Lysterfield South

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

Part of Lysterfield Park which is less well known, except by mountain bike riders. Starting at the carpark, head down Glen Track then turn left and walk up Wallaby Track until the end where it meets up with a number of other tracks. On the right hand side near the start of Lysterfield Hills track, you'll see the old red brick horse trough.

At this point, if you are feeling energetic and don't mind an approx. 1km steep walk, continue along Lysterfield Hills track and watch for the sign for the Trig Point Lookout. On a clear day there are stunning 360˚views and seats to rest on before heading back the way you came. Another possible detour on the way back is the Rock Garden walk which starts and ends along Valley View Track.

Take the Valley View Track all the way back to the carpark. Along the walk, enjoy the abundant bird life, huge granite boulders, stunning trees, kangaroos, maybe an echidna and watch for the quarry site on the left on the way back.

The track is good, mostly nice and wide gravel. There are hills, both up and down, but they are mostly long, continuous slopes rather than short, steep ones.

History: Lysterfield Reservoir was constructed in between 1927 and 1935. To build the dam wall, horses hauled heavy loads of stone along a narrow gauge tramway linking the quarries at the top and the dam site. Along this walk you can see an old quarry site and a horse drinking trough.

Lysterfield Park is also home to 24km of purpose-built mountain bike trails suitable for all skill levels. Among them is the 2006 Commonwealth Games course, a skills park where riders can practise their technique & easy family trails for all to enjoy around the lake and parkland.

Starting Point: At the carpark at the top of Hallam North Rd in Lysterfield. If you are coming from the Heatherton Rd end, watch out for the large water tank on the right-hand side as the road bends to the left and turn right just after the tank, then continue along Hallam North Rd until you reach the car park at the very end. DO NOT go to the main Lysterfield Lake car park!

Distance: 4.32km (about 6.4km if going to the trig point)

Toilets: Right near the carpark

Dogs: NOT Allowed
