A hidden gem for nature lovers, especially for anyone who loves orchids. Baluk Willam Nature Conservation Reserve is highly valued for its diversity of flora. This diversity arises from variations in topography, aspect, soil and drainage patterns. There are thirteen Ecological Vegetation Classes within the reserve. Some of these are shrubby foothill forest, damp sclerophyll forest, wet sclerophyll forest and heathy woodland (dominated by Silver-leafed Stringybark).
Of the 250 indigenous plant species recorded, 73 are orchid species, including several that are rare or vulnerable in Victoria. This makes the reserveone of the most significant terrestrial orchids sites in the state. Other significant flora species are Spreading Rope-rush, Cinnamon Wattle & Stiff Sword-sedge.
Here's a great website for identifying the plants, fungi & wildlife you might see there
The path ranges from fairly flat & wide rough gravel or road, to narrow dirt paths with tree roots, rocks & sharp grasses. I highly recommend good walking shoes & long pants & a walking stick if you have one could be handy.
You could stick to the wider tracks rather do the full route if you just want to do a bit of orchid spotting. Check out the download link below or the Friends of Baluk Willam Nature Conservation Reserve website for information about which orchids are flowering at which times of the year. The photos below were mostly taken in October 2018.
